Product Description

Titled "Free Your Mind," the Neoclassical Pop Art artwork inspired by Leonardo da Vinci drawing "Anatomical Drawing of a Skull to the Left," created c. 1489, currently at the Reynal & Hitchcock, New York

Throughout his lifetime, Leonardo made thousands of pages of notes and drawings on the human body. He was a pioneer in this area of painting. In his notebooks, da Vinci told: “It is necessary for a painter to be a good anatomist, so that he may be able to design the naked parts of the human frame and know the anatomy of the sinews, nerves, bones, and muscles.”

In da Vinci's notebook dated 1489, there is a series of well-defined drawings of the skull. To show what lies beneath, da Vinci used a knife to cut bones. Da Vinci's anatomical work was hundreds of years ahead of its time. Peter Abrahams, professor of clinical anatomy at Warwick University in the UK, affirms Da Vinci's anatomical drawings are accurate as anything created by a contemporary scientific artist.

According to that Art Historian Vasari, “he was one of the first that began to illustrate the problems of medicine with the doctrine of Galen, and to throw true light on anatomy, which up to that time had been veiled in the thick and gross shadow of ignorance.”

The Neoclassical Pop Art artwork offers a bridge between da Vinci's pioneering vision and Andy Warhol's colorful contemporary Pop skull art.
