Francisco Goya (1746–1828), is considered the most significant Spanish artist of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Goya is the last Old Master and the first of the moderns.
In 1779, Goya won an appointment as a painter to the Spanish royal court and established a reputation as a portrait artist commissioned by many royal circles. Nevertheless, he created works that criticized the social and political problems of his era.
