John Rubens Smith (1775 -1849) was a British Master of drawing, topographer, portrait and miniature painter who immigrated and worked in the United States. Smith comes from a lineage of artists. His father was a mezzotint engraver and his grandfather, Thomas Smith,was a landscape painter. His son, John Rowson Smith, was a panoramic and scenic artist. Smith derived his technique from his father and portrayed the United States before the invention of photography. As an art instructor his drawing academies and manuals influenced a generation of American artists. He died in New York City
