Product Description

Titled "Majo Style", the Neoclassical Pop Art artwork inspired by Eduard Mant's "Young Man in the Costume of a Majo", created in 1863, currently located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).

Manet's younger brother Gustave posed model as this fashionable young Spaniards known as majos, wearing the same trousers and bolero jacket worn by model Victorine Meurent in Mademoiselle V. . . in the Costume of an Espada

In 1804, at the dawn of the French Empire, only a few Spanish paintings were displayed in public collections in France. But, during the nineteenth century, French collectors and museum, acquired works by Spanish masters as El Greco, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Murillo, and Goya. The exposure to the Spanish Golden Age craftsmanship influenced the creation of French writers and artists, amongst Hugo, Delacroix, Degas, and especially Manet.

This painting demonstrates the strong influence of Diego Velázquez and other Spanish art over Manet's artwork. It was first exhibited at that year's Salon des Refusés and admired by most critics, although some complained that the Majo lacked psychological expression.

This bourgeois Parisian artwork is sure to make a stylish statement in any space.
