De La Tour

Georges de La Tour (1593-1652) was a French Baroque painter. His early works were painted in a Mannerist style, and later on, influenced by Caravaggio. De La Tour painted mostly religious chiaroscuro scenes lit by candlelight and torches. The simplicity of his forms gave his works a modern appearance.  Among His collectors were King Louis XIII, Henry II of Lorraine, and the Duke de La Ferté, and in 1639 he was appointed to the position of "Peintre du Roi," or the painter of the king.
