El Greco, 1541 -7 April 1614, was a painter, sculptor, and the architect of the Spanish Renaissance. His dramatic and expressionistic style met appreciation in the 20th century.
El Greco discarded classicist criteria as measure and proportion and regarded color as the most critical element of the painting, declaring that color had primacy over form. He believed that grace is the supreme quest of art, and that the painter achieves it when he manages to solve complex problems with ease.
