Product Description

Titled "La Araucana," the Neoclassical Pop Art Artwork inspired by El Grecoโ€™s โ€œPortrait of the Poet Alonso de Ercilla y Zรบรฑiga", painted in the 1570s, currently at the collection of the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg

ย

The Artwork features Alonso de Ercilla y Zรบรฑiga,ย aย A Spanish Epic Poet and nobleman, he served King Philip II of Spain, who appointed him a soldier in the conquest of the Araucanians of Chile. The conflict would shape the economics, politics and social life of Chile for centuries.ย

ย

Ercillaย was famed as the author ofย "La Araucana"ย (1569โ€“89), which is considered the most celebrated Renaissance epic poem, and one of the most important works of the Spanish Golden Age (Siglo de Oro). Composed on the battlefield, the poem describes his personal experiences.ย

ย

El Greco greatly influenced Pablo Picasso throughout his career. The tight connection between Painting and Poetry is hinted at in El Greco's portrait of the poet. Behind it lies the doctrine "ut pictura poesis," a Latin phrase meaning "as is painting so is poetry," which grew from the earlier theory that Poetry is a speaking picture and painting silent poetry. In the Renaissance, scholars concluded that sight preceded hearing, and so painting was superior. Pop Art had art experts abandon the academic "grading" science in favor of science fiction, which affected contemporary writing and painting.ย

ย

This Neoclassical Pop Artย artwork aims to bridge this ongoing argument, is perfect for lovers of both visual arts and poetry.ย ย

ย
