A Diva Universe With Nobody in It

A museum can borrow a word the way a pop song borrows a pose. Today’s news gives the Denver Art Museum a diva exhibition. The New York Times calls it an exploration of “the diva universe.” Colorado Public Radio asks, with a wink, “What’s a DIVA?” and promises the show will let you know, honey.

I would like to know too. In the opera house a diva was the singer the evening could not survive without. In pop she treats the camera as a stage and the stage as a birthright: the high note, the look, the refusal to shrink. Museums have spent years trying to hang that heat on a wall. Sometimes they get the costumes. Sometimes they get the myth and miss the person.

Denver’s headlines name no artist, no object, no date, and no curator. So the universe is a marquee, and the cast is still in the wings. A diva without a body is a press adjective.

Today’s news is not all that heat. The Arts Fuse is looking at a museum that “won’t act its age.” Dallas News has a calendar for Oct. 30 to Nov. 5. WOODTV.com says the Muskegon art museum is about to unveil an indoor mini golf course. The Alachua Chronicle says the Harn Museum of Art reopens a renovated gallery and study center on Oct. 27. This is what is actually happening: useful, local, and nowhere near a diva.

Two papers noticed Denver. That is not a frenzy, and it is not nothing. One headline offers a cosmos. The other offers a question. I am with the question. Until the museum says who is in the room, “diva universe” is a costume with no one inside it.
