In the original painting, the 35 Years Old Duchess is wearing a black dress of a Maja, mourning the death of her husband a year earlier.
Although Goya was fifty, deaf, married, and still not fully recovered from an illness, some speculate they may have had a romance because her right index finger points the ground where the words solo Goya (only Goya) written on the sand, and her rings inscribed Alba and Goya
The painting had great personal importance to Goya, who kept it in his studio long after her death.
