Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606- 1669) was a Dutch painter and printmaker highly successful during Holland's Golden Age. He was recognized as a forerunner of the Romantic Movement and acknowledged as one of the greatest painters in art history.
Known for uncompromising realism and as a painter of light and shade, roughly one-tenth of his work consists of studies of his self-portraits. His exceptional self-observation raised many speculations.
