Titled "Anatomically Correct", The Neoclassical Pop Art artwork inspired by Paulus Pontius Écorché Engraving after Peter Paul Rubens, created in 1640.
An écorché is a figure study, created by a student artist for the Master artwork, drawn showing the muscles of the body without skin.
At the height of his career, Rubens led a campaign to reproduce his artworks in printed format. Dissatisfied with unauthorized reproductions of his work, in 1619 he copyrighted his images and hired printmakers to translate his compositions into authorized reproductive engravings and woodcuts.
Rubens strictly supervised the copying of his work, assisting printmakers to emulate his unique paintings expression. His challenging demands were met by Pontius who was trained as a painter and exhibited a style that accurately conveys the nature of Ruben's original paintings, faithfully translating them into engraving.
By the time Paulus Pontius was twenty-four, he was a master in the Antwerp guild and served as the primary artist in charge of producing engravings after the work of Rubens. Pontius lived and worked in Rubens's home until a year after the painter's death.
