The Neoclassical Pop Art artwork "Anatomically Correct" is inspired by Paulus Pontius's Écorché Engraving after Peter Paul Rubens, created in 1640. Neoclassical Pop Art created the purple and green image on this print as a new original, a Pop homage that reimagines the Baroque original.
An écorché is a figure study, created by a student artist for the Master artwork, drawn showing the muscles of the body without skin.
At the height of his career, Rubens led a campaign to reproduce his artworks in printed format. Dissatisfied with unauthorized reproductions of his work, he copyrighted his images in 1619 and hired printmakers to translate his compositions into authorized reproductive engravings and woodcuts.
Rubens closely supervised the copying of his work, helping printmakers emulate the expression of his unique paintings. Pontius, trained as a painter, met his challenging demands with a style that accurately conveys the nature of Ruben's original paintings and translates them faithfully into engraving.
When he was twenty-four, Paulus Pontius was already a master in the Antwerp guild, serving as the primary artist in charge of engravings after the work of Rubens. Pontius lived and worked in Rubens's home until a year after the painter died.
