It is one of the few dated drawing on paper attributed to Titian. It was used as a study for the panel of Saint Sebastian (1522) in the Averoldi Polyptych for the high altar of the Church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Brescia.
Titian took inspiration for this study from Michelangelo’s sculpture of the Rebellious Slave, executed in 1513.
