Product Description

Juan de Pareja was a Spanish painter born into slavery in Southern Spain described as a"morisco" convert from Islam, mixed origin, with an unusual to that region black skin color.

During the 17th century, he served as a master painter at the atelier of Diego Velázquez.

In 1649 Juan accompanied Velázquez on his second trip to Italy. During this trip where Velázquez painted his Portrait " Juan de Pareja." The painting is one of the only black man portraits created during that period. It was unveiled in the Pantheon of Rome in March 1650 during celebrations in honor of the Patron Velázquez Patron Virtuosos.

On the 23rd of November, while still in Rome, Velázquez granted Juan a letter of freedom from slavery, which entered into effect four years later.

From his time of freedom and until he died in Madrid, Juan worked as an independent painter. His artworks demonstrate the knowledge he gained in Velazquez's Atelier and his expertise of the various Spanish and Italian painters.

The Neoclassical Pop Art artwork features an abstraction of that portrait.
