Product Description

Art on acrylic adds a contemporary Stylish look to any room.

Titled "Medusa in flame", the Neoclassical Pop Art inspired by Caravaggio "Medusa," created in 1597, currently held in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

The iconography comes from the mythological shield of the Greek goddess Athena used by the Medici to represent their military power. And the artwork commission to glorify the Grand Duke of Tuscany's courage in defeating his enemies.

Athena's shield features Medusa, a Greek Myth Gorgon Monster Woman, with hair made of snakes. Her horrifying demonic gaze carried the power turning anyone she stares at her to stone.

Medusa was beheaded by the mythical hero Perseus. He used a mirror shield to avoid direct eye contact with her. However, even after Medusa's death, her decapitated head continued to petrify those that looked at it.

Caravaggio captures the injured Medusa's last moments between life and death, with a horror expression on the face while executed, and the hair serpents distort in all directions.

Caravaggio painted two versions of the Head of Medusa. The first is known as "Murtula," and the second, known as "The Head of Medusa", was commissioned by Cardinal del Monte, who worked as the Medici family's agent in Rome, after seeing "Murtula" during a studio visit.

According to Art Historian Vasari, da Vinci created a Medusa shield, kept in the Grand Duke's collection. Therefore, many assert Cardinal del Monte

instructed Caravaggio to use da Vinci's artwork as an inspiration.

Caravaggio modeled himself as Medusa's face using a mirror to look at his reflection over the shield in the same manner that Medusa caught in her deadly gaze moments before being killed.

The Neoclassical Pop Art artwork suggests Medusa symbolizes one's ego/mind, and its destruction transfer the power of the gaze to the meditative viewer.

This Neoclassical Pop Art piece presents a one-of-a-kind pop composition, adding to the mythology a new spiritual statement and a contemporary expression.
