The Neoclassical Pop Art "Medusa in flame" is inspired by Caravaggio's "Medusa," created in 1597 and currently held in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The image is an original Neoclassical Pop Art work, made new as a Pop homage to the Baroque original.
Its iconography comes from the mythological shield of the Greek goddess Athena, used by the Medici to represent their military power. The artwork was commissioned to glorify the Grand Duke of Tuscany's courage in defeating his enemies.
Athena's shield shows Medusa, a Greek Myth Gorgon Monster Woman with hair made of snakes. Her horrifying demonic gaze had the power to turn anyone she stared at to stone.
The mythical hero Perseus beheaded Medusa. To avoid direct eye contact with her, he used a mirror shield. Yet even after Medusa's death, her decapitated head kept petrifying those who looked at it.
Caravaggio captures the injured Medusa's last moments between life and death, a horror expression on her face as she is executed and the hair serpents twisting in all directions.
Caravaggio painted the Head of Medusa in two versions. The first is known as "Murtula," and the second, known as "The Head of Medusa", was commissioned by Cardinal del Monte, who worked as the Medici family's agent in Rome, after seeing "Murtula" during a studio visit.
Art Historian Vasari records that da Vinci created a Medusa shield, kept in the Grand Duke's collection. Therefore, many assert Cardinal del Monte
instructed Caravaggio to use da Vinci's artwork as an inspiration.
Using a mirror to see his reflection, Caravaggio modeled himself as Medusa's face over the shield, just as Medusa caught her deadly gaze moments before being killed.
The Neoclassical Pop Art artwork suggests that Medusa symbolizes one's ego/mind, and that its destruction transfers the power of the gaze to the meditative viewer.
