Product Description

A skull from a Renaissance anatomy notebook, in warm orange. Neoclassical Pop Art's new version lifts the skull from the notebook and paints it orange, making new art from an anatomy study. Free Your Mind turns scientific curiosity into a bold graphic.

“Free Your Mind: The Thinking Skull” is Neoclassical Pop Art's new Pop take on Leonardo da Vinci's “Anatomical Drawing of a Skull to the Left”, drawn c. 1489 and recorded at Reynal & Hitchcock, New York. In orange, the anatomy page becomes a bold graphic about curiosity.

Throughout his lifetime, Leonardo made thousands of pages of notes and drawings on the human body. He was a pioneer in this area of painting. In his notebooks, da Vinci told: “It is necessary for a painter to be a good anatomist, so that he may be able to design the figure parts of the human frame and know the anatomy of the sinews, nerves, bones, and muscles.”

In da Vinci's notebook dated 1489, there is a series of well-defined drawings of the skull. To show what lies beneath, da Vinci used a knife to cut bones. Da Vinci's anatomical work was hundreds of years ahead of its time. Peter Abrahams, professor of clinical anatomy at Warwick University in the UK, affirms Da Vinci's anatomical drawings are accurate as anything created by a contemporary scientific artist.

According to that Art Historian Vasari, “he was one of the first that began to illustrate the problems of medicine with the doctrine of Galen, and to throw true light on anatomy, which up to that time had been veiled in the thick and gross shadow of ignorance.”

The Neoclassical Pop Art artwork offers a bridge between da Vinci's pioneering vision and Andy Warhol's colorful contemporary Pop skull art.

A contemporary print, created by the Neoclassical Pop Art studio. A collectible statement piece where the old masters meet pop culture, made for true art lovers.

Anatomy as inspiration.
