Basquiat, Still Too Alive to Be Tidy

I like Basquiat best when the word “rare” does not make him sound safely behind glass. The High Museum of Art plans a 2027 exhibition featuring rare works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Hypebeast reported on October 30. That is a welcome invitation—and a small warning. Scarcity can sharpen our attention, but it can also turn art into a prize whose price and prestige speak louder than its ideas.

Basquiat’s rise carried the charge of a name claimed in public. He moved from New York’s street culture into galleries and the international art world, where the outsider could become a star without ceasing to be an outsider. That uneasy passage is part of the story, not a footnote. Museums can honor an artist while smoothing away the friction that made the work matter: who gets seen, who gets paid, and who gets to decide what counts as art.

The word “rare” also belongs to our age of collectible culture. We queue for limited sneakers, chase special editions, and watch images circulate until a person’s face becomes a logo. Basquiat’s name has traveled that route too. The danger is not that art becomes popular; it is that recognition becomes a substitute for looking. A museum can interrupt the scroll. It can give us time with an artist whose place in art history is still argued over, not merely stamped onto a tote bag.

So I hope the High’s exhibition treats rarity as a reason to look harder, not simply as a sales pitch for importance. The best museum show does not settle an artist into a polished legend. It lets the questions stay lively: what happens when rebellion enters the collection, and can an institution display a challenge without domesticating it? Basquiat’s work has outlived the moment that made him famous. The test now is whether the museum can make that fame feel like a beginning rather than a conclusion.
