Neoclassical Pop Art's “Manet in Skull-Cap” keeps “Self-Portrait with Skull-Cap” by Édouard Manet (1878–79; the Artizon Museum, Tokyo, Japan) close to the painter's own ocher and black, adding only the clarity of Pop.

This portrait created by looking in a mirror is one of the only two self-portraits Manet painted throughout his career. It is a meaningful piece demonstrating Manet's self-perception of himself. Manet regarded this painting as private and only showed it to people close to him.

Although Manet is best known for portraying the fashions and customs of modern Paris, many art critics argue the skullcap he is wearing recalls similar self-portraits Titian and Filippino Lippi portraits. Some propose that Manet, a prominent artist during his time, used Titian's hat as symbolizing his artistic achievements in comparison to the like-minded greatness comparable to the old masters.

The dark background in the original painting influenced by Velazquez, Goya, and the Spanish masters, designed for showcasing a dark gloomy feeling, is replaced in the Neoclassical pop art with a colorful and playful abstract pattern and the portrait of manet contemporary.
