Product Description
The Neoclassical Pop Art artwork “Sensation” is inspired by Eduard Manet’s painting “Olympia,” created in 1863 and currently at Musée d'Orsay. Paris.
Manet’s Olympia inspired after Titian’s “Venus of Urbino”, created in 1538. And Titian’s Venus inspired after Giorgione's “Dresden Venus”, created in 1510.
Olympia's mythological posture, modeled by a French model attended by a black servant with a black cat at her feet, raised a scandal when exhibited at the French Salon.
Manet's "abuse" of the traditionally idealized academic venus classical figure, posed by a local model, provoked a violent reaction among the critics. It serves as a historical reminder of the limited importance one must give critics, that at least in this case proved unable to seize the genuine aspects of Manet's contemporary masterpiece.
In the Neoclassical Pop Art artwork, Eduard Manet stands in the background overlooking Olympia.
