Product Description

Unique piece. One canvas only. 24 x 32 in (approx. 61 x 81 cm).

A goddess of war who looks away from the fight. This canvas carries a new painting by Neoclassical Pop Art, an original Pop work that keeps the young warrior's helmeted profile and armour and sets them glowing in ember red and bronze. It is a tribute with a voice of its own: Baroque gloom becomes heat, and the stillness of the pose becomes concentration.

“The Winner's Goddess” is original artwork by Neoclassical Pop Art, a homage to “Pallas Athena”, painted in oil on canvas by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn with a pupil around 1655 (the museum dates it c. 1657) and held at the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon. Hang it and you own new art with a lineage you can name, not a reproduction of the old picture.

Its authorship, subject and date were long debated. The warrior is very young; she grips a spear in her right hand and, in her left, a shield bearing Medusa's head and its serpents, while an owl sits atop her helmet. Shield and owl are what mark her as the goddess Athena. The canvas was later cut at the top and along the left edge, so the shield was once almost fully in view. A theory now gaining support places the picture in a trilogy of goddesses with Venus and Juno, said to have belonged to the art dealer Herman Becker (c. 1617–1678), who may have commissioned it. Later owners included Count Baudouin in Paris and Catherine II of Russia, before the painting left the Hermitage in 1930.

Wisdom in armour, for the wall where you think things through.
