Product Description

Hansken in red and blue, dressed for the beach. This towel carries a new Neoclassical Pop Art work, a Pop tribute that sets a Dutch master's elephant against hot red and deep blue. Spread it on the sand and the drawing reads from across the beach.

Behind the colour stands “My First Elephant”, an original Neoclassical Pop Art design and a tribute to Rembrandt's black-chalk study “An Elephant” (1637), now in the British Museum. Red against blue gives it the punch of a travelling-show poster, fitting for an elephant who toured Europe as a performer.

Rembrandt's study records the Asian elephant species, Elephas maximus, for the first time. According to the Natural History Museum in London: “Rembrandt’s paintings and sketches are the original and correct portrayal of the type specimen of an Asian elephant.”

In memory of Hansken, the incredible 17th-century animal performer, we titled the Neoclassical Pop Art print “My First Elephant.” She sword fought, waved a flag and put a hat on her head, and the greatest Master of her time, Rembrandt, luckily documented her.

A beach towel with a true story printed on it.
