'La Femme' is a Neoclassical Pop Art artwork that answers Sandro Botticelli's landmark painting "The Birth of Venus," created c. 1485 and currently located at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.

 

One of the most significant Florentine Painters, Sandro Botticelli lived 1445-1510. Perhaps the most appreciated Italian show-stopper ever painted, The Birth of Venus is a milestone that defines the 15th century Italian Renaissance.

 

Behind it lies the Greek myth of Kronos and Uranus. In return, Venus, the Goddess of Love and beauty, rises as a fully formed mature woman from the foam of a cresting wave and is carried on a shell drifting to shore in Cyprus.

 

To the myth, Botticelli adds the mythological Greek gods of the winds, who blow Venus to the shore.

 

The face of Venus is related to the model Simonetta Vespucci, whom all of Florence saw as a figure of feminine beauty.

 

Generations of Pop Culture artists, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Lady Gaga and Beyonce among them, have drawn on Botticelli's feminine beauty, style, appeal and divine glam, down to Venus' hairstyle.

 

Drawing on Plato's philosophy, Botticelli makes Venus an icon of love, spiritual development and inner beauty, suggesting that contemplating an object of beauty eases the mind into a meditative state of harmony and love.

 

Commissioned by the Medici Family, a major patron of Botticelli, the work is said to have hung above their marital bed, daring for the time, and it still makes perfect wall art to finish a bedroom, though Venus brings her blessings of love anywhere.
