The drawing is a study of the three times life-size scale painting of the Libyan Sibyl at the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
The Libyan Sibyl was the prophetic High Priestess preaching the Oracle of Zeus-Ammon at Siwa Oasis in the Libyan Desert. According to Greek mythology, she was the poet daughter of Apollo predicting the "coming of the day when that which is hidden shall be revealed." A prophet.
The complex pose portraying her stepping down from the throne holding the book of prophecy in the fresco painting required Michaelangelo's numerous drawings.
Although the High Priestess is a woman, Michaelangelo emphasizes muscles and the definition of a male physique. Michelangelo was known for using male models for his depictions of women.
