Product Description
An emperor and the dog that leans on him. The Neoclassical Pop Art version repaints the Venetian court portrait in Pop colour, so the bond between emperor and hound arrives as a new oil. Power and affection share one canvas: the dog leans in, and the emperor stays composed.
With “Charles V: The King's Dog”, Neoclassical Pop Art makes a new Pop oil from Titian's “Portrait of Charles V with a Dog”, painted in 1533 and now at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Its Pop colour lets the emperor's composure and the dog's affection share one modern canvas.
The portrait features Karl V, Holy Roman Emperor with a hunting dog.
It is a copy or reinterpretation of a portrait of Karl painted in 1532 by Jakob Seisenegger. That portrait was natural but had not pleased Karl and during Titian's stay in Bologna in 1533, he paid Titian 500 ducats to paint a new version of it. This new version is similar to its predecessor but completely transforms its composition. It later inspired Goya's 1799 Karl IV in his Hunting Clothes.
