Product Description
The loudest version, for a wall that can take it. It is Neoclassical Pop Art's most crowded tribute to the self-portrait, a new oil that refuses restraint. Five colours crowd around a famously intense face.
“The Shadow Self-Portrait” in blue, red, yellow, purple and green is Neoclassical Pop Art's loudest tribute to Vincent van Gogh's “Self-Portrait”, painted in 1889 and now at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. For walls that can take a crowd.
Like the Old Masters, Van Gogh painted himself as a model using a mirror. His in-depth self-observation and self-study generated over forty-three self-portraits, paintings, or drawings in ten years.
Thus he wrote to his sister: "I am looking for a deeper likeness than that obtained by a photographer." And later to his brother: "People say, and I am willing to believe it, that it is hard to know yourself. But it is not easy to paint yourself, either. The portraits painted by Rembrandt are more than a view of nature, they are more like a revelation".
Art Historians debate whether this is the last Self Portrait Van Gogh created following his admission to hospital after mutilating his ear and before his tragic death.
Van Gogh sent the painting to his brother, the art dealer Theo, with a letter saying: "I hope you will notice that my facial expressions have become much calmer, although my eyes have the same insecure look as before, or so it appears to me."
Comes in a classical pop art composition of four, the neoclassical pop art artwork takes the liberty to shine out a pop of colors with a double image representing the shadow that shadowed Van Gogh's self-perception.
