Product Description

A complementary-colour duel. Neoclassical Pop Art stages that duel on purpose: the Pop version pits complementaries against each other in a new painting. Red against green is electric from across the room and surprisingly tender up close.

Neoclassical Pop Art's “The Shadow Self-Portrait” sets red against green around Vincent van Gogh's “Self-Portrait” (1889, the Musée d'Orsay, Paris), a complementary duel that makes the stare electric.

Like the Old Masters, Van Gogh painted himself as a model using a mirror. His in-depth self-observation and self-study generated over forty-three self-portraits, paintings, or drawings in ten years.

Thus he wrote to his sister: "I am looking for a deeper likeness than that obtained by a photographer." And later to his brother: "People say, and I am willing to believe it, that it is hard to know yourself. But it is not easy to paint yourself, either. The portraits painted by Rembrandt are more than a view of nature, they are more like a revelation".

Art Historians debate whether this is the last Self Portrait Van Gogh created following his admission to hospital after mutilating his ear and before his tragic death.

Van Gogh sent the painting to his brother, the art dealer Theo, with a letter saying: "I hope you will notice that my facial expressions have become much calmer, although my eyes have the same insecure look as before, or so it appears to me."

Unlike the original therapeutic green color, the neoclassical pop art artwork takes the liberty to shine out a pop of colors with a double image representing the shadow that shadowed Van Gogh's self-perception.

A collectible original artwork. Created by the Neoclassical Pop Art studio as an original contemporary painting.

Opposites on the colour wheel, one restless face.

A collectible statement piece for true art lovers, where the old masters and pop culture meet.
