“Don Juan of Madrid” is new art: Velázquez's painting “Juan de Pareja”, created in 1650 and now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Manhattan, New York, USA, reworked as Pop so a Baroque masterpiece speaks in contemporary colour. When the painting was created, Juan de Pareja, himself a notable painter, was enslaved and owned by Velázquez. A rare portrait of a black man for its time.
At the back, Juan de Pareja himself, traced in glowing orange Pop line work. At the front, the round Neoclassical Pop Art emblem frames a Vitruvian figure after Leonardo da Vinci's ink on paper drawing "The Vitruvian Man", created c. 1490 after Vitruvius and held in the Gabinetto dei disegni e delle stampe of the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice; below it run "Roma" lettering and the year 1650.
