With “Don Juan of Madrid”, the studio takes Velázquez's painting “Juan de Pareja”, created in 1650 and held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Manhattan, New York, USA, into Pop art, giving a Spanish court portrait the energy of the street. Juan de Pareja, a notable painter in his own right, was enslaved by Velázquez when the painting was created. It is one of the few paintings of a black man from that time.
Juan de Pareja's portrait fills the back in cool blue Pop line work. On the front, the Neoclassical Pop Art roundel holds a Vitruvian figure after Leonardo da Vinci's ink on paper drawing "The Vitruvian Man", drawn c. 1490 after Vitruvius and kept in the Gabinetto dei disegni e delle stampe of the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice, with "Roma" lettering and the year 1650 beneath.
